Studio Party | Paint Pumpkins in the Style of Kusama

from 55.00

October 26, 2-5PM | Showfields

ArtsClub’s Studio Parties offer a hands-on approach to learning about the materials and techniques of iconic 20th century artists.

We’ll start with a lesson on Japanese contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama, whose dotted pumpkin paintings and sculptures have helped make her one of the most expensive living female artists. Then we’ll get hands-on and paint our own canvases and pumpkins inspired by Kusama’s iconic designs. Yes, real pumpkins — just in time to take home artistic halloween decorations.

Open bar of Recess and Arctic Summer included.

About Yayoi Kusama

Well known for her infinity-room installations and her paintings of polka dotted pumpkins, Yayoi Kusama works in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, film, performance, and immersive installation.

Kusama’s instantly recognizable pumpkins have become fixtures of contemporary art and popular culture—and have helped make her one of the world’s most expensive living female artists. Kusama began drawing pumpkins as a child in pre-war Japan, where her family owned a plant nursery that farmed kabocha squash. Her obsession only grew with time and the pumpkin became to Kusama what the Campbell’s Soup can is to Warhol: an everyday comestible elevated to the status of fine art. Kusama’s signature dotted pumpkins have since appeared as works on paper, handheld figurines, towering sculptures, and in the artist’s immersive infinity room installations.
