East Village Studio Night | Mexican Muralists

  • ArtsClub 311 East 3rd Street New York, NY, 10009 United States (map)

The Mexican Muralist movement began in the 1920s with the Mexican government commissioning many murals from well-known artists of the time to teach the population about the country’s history. These murals would depict the country’s past, present, and future and contained social, political, and historical messages. The mural commission came in the immediate wake of the Mexican Revolution.

The “Big Three” artists of the movement were Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, though there were many more artists involved, including female artists. The murals were created in many public settings such as chapels, schools, and government buildings. The popularity of the Mexican muralist project started a tradition which continues to this day in Mexico and has extended throughout the rest of the Americas.

Ticket includes art history lesson and all art materials (including a 9x12 inch canvas). Coveralls/ smocks will be provided to protect your clothing.
